Department of pathological addiction – Maglie
The Department pathological addiction (DPA) in Maglie (Italy) is one of the five departments in Lecce county with 6 highly qualified employees and over 20 social workers. DPA is responsible for defining the regional action plan designed to tackle drug use and abuse. It is a reference point to the local services for the drug addiction (called SerT) which includes 39 municipalities (over 170.000 inhabitans). The DPA and its local offices are the public services of the Regional Sanitary System devoted to the care of the prevention and the rehabilitation of the people that have consequent problems to the abuse of psychoactive substances or other addictions. The DPA provides epidemiological surveillance, the characteristics of drugs in circulation, the abuse and drug-related phenomena and studies focused on compulsive behaviors in order to ensure early detection of risks and possible consequences for the health of the population. It also promotes collaboration between public administrations with competences in this field, schools, police forces, associations, rehabilitation facilities and reception centres involved in the prevention, cure rehabilitation and reintegration of drug-addicted individuals.
